A Dream in a Dream

1:58 AM / Posted by ulrikov / comments (0)

I was sleeping one time in the middle of the day. While sleeping, I dreamed of something wherein there was a party in the place where I was sleeping. I suddenly woke up and realized it was a dream. I wandered around the place and saw familiar faces in that place. I closed my eyes for a moment and... I was back to the bed. I was shocked. That may be another part of the dream...

I talked about it with my partner, which was beside me all that time, and she said that she had the same dream and she went back to sleep. I stood up and saw some unfamiliar faces in the apartment. My acquaintance in the apartment told me to get ready for there was a party. I said to myself, this sounds familiar. And then the people arrived and there was a small party. Food was everywhere and it seems like whenever I talked to the visitors, they just ignored me. That seems pretty odd. I was eating and then I closed my eyes for a moment there, and I was back to the bed again! Everything seems to be repeating and repeating.

It seems that I couldn't get out of my dream which had another dream in it. Every time I woke up and closed my eyes, I would revert back to where I was... back in the bed! Finally, I tried my best to stand out of the bed. And then I shouted to my loudest voice just to stand up, which was very difficult to do. And I finally I woke up, this time it was for real. My partner was shocked of what happened to me. I stood up and immediately searched the web for a particular explanation of a recurring or cyclic dream but I couldn't find anything relevant.

Upon further investigation, I really couldn't find any sources which point me to the right direction. The only thing that I could link with that experience is a nightmare. There can be no other situation that can best describe the continuous recurring cyclic dream which I have experienced. I am still trying to find answers for that experience.

Starcraft 2 Release Date Confirmed

3:02 PM / Posted by ulrikov / comments (0)

With nearly three years since its announcement in the BlizCon 2007, Blizzard finally confirmed the release date of its most awaited sequel to the most successful Real-time Strategy Game, Starcraft II : Wings of Liberty.

Blizzard announced that Starcraft 2 will be out for sale this coming July 27, 2010 in various countries around the globe (except for China). After the long waiting time, Starcraft fans will now be able to enjoy the game that will supposedly shape the name of RTS in the upcoming years.

Beta Testing were updated up to Patch 10. Unfortunately, it was said that Starcraft 2 won't have any LAN support. This was fairly justified by Blizzard with the emergence of its hyped Battle.net servers, which will cater to the multi-player experience. With or without LAN support, fans of this great game are eager to take hold of this most anticipated game. You can pre-order Starcraft II : Wings of Liberty in two packages. The standard box will cost around $59.99 while the Collector's Edition will be at $99.99 (see my collector's edition post for details).

Lockerz.com Scam

10:50 AM / Posted by ulrikov / comments (0)

For the past months, I've been divulging some time in a invite-only website which lets you earn points (PTZ) and in the later part could be redeemed for prices such as popular gadgets like the Ipod, Imac, PC games, DVD games, etc.. Many have claimed that lockerz is a scam. For the benefit of everybody, I will share my experience with this site.

Lockerz.com is a website which offers alot of opportunities to its members to earn points. You can earn PTZ by watching videos, logging in and by answering the daily topic (2 PTZ each). The thing that really intrigued me was acquiring the Ipod Touch which was worth around 1300 PTZ. The thing about their redemption period is that it occurs in the last days of every month. Within this only, can a member redeem his points for prizes.

Finally I was able to save around 1,300 PTZ. And I waited all night of April 30th for the April 2010 redemption period. When the redemption period began (which usually takes 20 minutes or so), I was already logged into my account and immediately went for the PTZ shop, the place where you can redeem your PTZ in Lockerz. But here comes the problem... when I got there (I could've sworn it only took me around 15 seconds to get to the Prizes List), most were already FRESHED OUT...in other words, out of stock!! Oh my god...15 seconds?!!!, and it was already out of stock (even the 14,000 PTZ Mac Computers were freshed out)!! Let's just say that their users or members are around 300,000+ and they have gadgets ready for members like 5 of each kind.

You have a very slim chance of redeeming an item (0.0001%)..This is just impossible, then I realized that this site is fraudulent in nature... and its goal is to deceive people into their site with the promise of prizes, which were non-existent in the very first place. Their goal was met however, they earn a lot of traffic into their website. But like any other website which scams, lockerz.com will one way or the other trample down...

I checked on their facebook fan page, and I saw a lot of people were complaining with the same thing. Lockerz evidently deleted all discussions and posts regarding the SCAM they created. Learn from my experience...it's a scam!!

You can get something here but you have a very very slim chance, especially if you're an International Member. So, don't waste your time in here.

Sinulog 2010 Survival Guide

3:48 AM / Posted by ulrikov / comments (0)

One of the special events held in the city of Cebu City, Philippines is the Sinulog. It's a feast held yearly by Cebuanos in honor of their patron saint, Santo Niño de Cebú. For Cebuanos, the holidays are not over until the Sinulog is over.

Sinulog is a huge event for the city. Parties and a lot of events will be held on this time. Sinulog 2010 will be no different from the previous celebrations of Sinulog. The Sinulog Mardigra will be accompanied by street dancing, company floats and a whole lot more; Major streets will be closed for this grand event. Consequently, large flocks of people will find themselves upon the streets of Cebu City.

Now, I've been through most of the Sinulog events in my life and all I can say is that there are quite a number of things that you'll need to prepare for this festive event. That's why I have come up with a basic guide to the first timers of Sinulog. I've listed quite a few things that you may need for your personal Sinulog 2010 Survival Guide.

1. Eat a Heavy Breakfast.
Yes, you'll be doing a lot of walking on this part and you certainly don't want to miss the most important meal of your day. Don't go without this one.

2. Wear Comfortable Clothes.
Chances are you'll be with the crowd while watching or celebrating Sinulog. This simply means, you'll sometimes find yourself in a tight position. Add the hot sun into this combination and you'll find yourself sweating like a pig if you don't wear comfortable clothing. Also, use a pair of comfortable footwear; for the ladies, don't wear something with high heels...You'll find yourself on the losing end by the middle of the day. Just wear your ordinary walking shoes.

3. Bring Extra Shirts.
In conjunction with the previous guide, you'll definitely need an extra shirt for the Sinulog event. By the end of the day, you'd want to wear something else that's fresh before you head out for the post-event parties.

4. Bring Potable Water.
So, it's a hot day and you're with the crowd. There's nothing refreshing than a gulp of good old fashioned water. So, don't hesitate to bring one. Sure, there will be a lot of bottled water vendors in the streets but usually they overprice for this event alone and it'll eat up your budget before you know it.

5. Bring Money.
Well, this definitely should come in handy especially in the post-event parties where beer and alcohol kicks in. There will be a lot of booze in Sinulog 2010 but it will not be free, so set aside a good budget for this event.

To sum it all up, this survival guide will set you straight for the Sinulog 2010. Enjoy the feast, eat a hearty meal and Pit Senyor to everyone!

Ace Online Review

10:15 PM / Posted by ulrikov / comments (0)

I was browsing www.freemmorpglist.com at one time when something draw my attention. It was a game similar to SCO (Space Cowboy Online). SCO has seized to operate since December 2007 due to legal reasons. SCO was one of my favorite mmo games before and I had a lot of fun playing the game.

For those who have no idea of the game. Let me put it this way. There are two nations battling for supremacy in a planet. You get to be a pilot in one of the nation. And you have to fight your in-born enemy, the opposing nation. The game is skilled based, unlike other mmo's where point and click is the main theme. In this game, you have to show your piloting skills in order to survive missions, and defeat the opposing force in raids.

Well, with nothing much to do, I downloaded AceOnline and played it. From first interface, a few minor changes were introduced into the game. Adding training assistance and reinforcing the storyline was a good move for AceOnline. It gave the decent gamer an idea of what he's leveling for and what he's fighting for.

Amidst the minor introductory changes, the pilot Avatars also had a make-over. They're a bit good looking compared to it's SCO predecessor. Gameplay remained the same except for some mission changes. Missions were a bit easier this time around and the luxury of having Happy Hour 'til you achieve Level 81 is enough to keep the average gamer going with his leveling frenzy.

At first, I thought it was the same old SCO-type game. But there has been a lot of changes which got me hooked on this game. AceOnline did a great job of reconstructing the whole WAR idea. Participating in wars now yield exemplary rewards. These rewards would definitely trigger activity from both sides to join in skirmishes and air battles.

Well, let's go to the scores...

Gameplay: 8
The good old formula of having rival nations fighting against each other in battles, I think is the best thing that moved this game. PvP is different compared to other mmo's. And the importance of defending your nation is definitely a good sense. There are still unbalances left in the game but ultimately it's a good game. But in order to enjoy the game, you must be around the level 40+. Within this level, you'll be experiencing the real battles...

Graphics: 8
For an mmo game, this has some decent graphics. Jet and missile trails add eye candy for the average gamer. Though not really extensive on certain details, it still is very good. Do note that mmo's are designed to have a mass audience (increasing graphic standards might hamper gaming population).

Sound: 7
AceOnline has interlinked voice chat in-game..making chatting with fellow pilots much easier especially in the heat of battle. The gamer also has an option to add his favorite music into the game via pasting it over the music folder, which quite a good idea considering all the grinding..you'll want to hear music that you definitely like. Some in-game music may be a bit repetitive, though..but not really that hard to handle.

Lifespan: 8
Having a good community and active GM's make AceOnline enjoyable for the average gamer. Random events and battles also add much into the lifespan of the game. The outstanding gameplay would mke most gamers participate in the nation battles. Warpoint rewards are definitely worth it.

Overall: 7.75
AceOnline scored quite good in the long run. There is much potential in this game. For a free mmo, this game is a keeper. I'll definitely endorse this to everyone.. For those who want to experience skill-based action...this game is for you. Although not open to all audience, this game would still pack a punch for those seeking for action.

Runes of Magic Online Philippines - A Brief Look

6:59 PM / Posted by ulrikov / comments (0)

One of the most anticipated free-to-play MMORPGs (massive multi-player online role playing game) of 2008 was Runes of Magic. This game was officially released on the last quarter of 2008 to the global community. Some time soon, Runes of Magic will hit the Philippine shores. This game will be under the publishing of IP E-Games.

Runes of Magic revolves around the lands of Taborea. At first glance, you'd see a slight similarity with WoW (World of Warcraft) on this one. This is because the makers of this game, the Taiwan-based Runewaker Entertainment, were pretty much big fans of WoW. That kind of affected how their game looked and feel. However, Runes of Magic offers some unique features into the MMORPG genre - most especially, the Dual Class System. With this, Philippine online gamers can choose to have two classes of their preference - a primary and secondary class. There are a number of classes to choose from within Runes of Magic - Warrior, Rogue, Scout, Mage, Priest, Knight, and the two new classes, Druid and Warden. There are a large number of possibilities that this game will yield. Approximately, there are 30 combinations that gamers can come up using the main six classes. It offers a good open space for gamers to utilize for character development.

Philippine gamers will surely appreciate the unique style of Runes of Magic Online. Right now, it is under Alpha testing and pretty much soon this will be on Closed and Open Beta. The IP E-games website for Runes of Magic Philippines still features 2 videos and a registration button. According to IP E-Games, they will be releasing announcements for online Philippine CBT and OBT sometime this month. Hopefully, our Philippine gamers can enjoy this astounding game by the holidays.

SM Cebu Boutiques : A Man's Perspective (Part 1)

11:42 PM / Posted by ulrikov / comments (1)

Men, typically, are not really into shopping clothes and other fashion related accessories. Men don't value such items as compared to women. It's in the genepool of men never to indulge too much time for oneself in shopping for the best fashion statement. Anything goes for a typical male being.

Now here comes the female gender. Women like to shop no matter what. It has been said in studies that women spend more time in fashion boutiques as compared to watching a single movie. Yes, women like to shop; and unfortunately, the male partner (hu
sband or boyfriend) has to accompany the female counterpart or there will be trouble.

Which brings us to our topic today - A man's perspective on female boutiques. If you're a man and you're accompanying your female partner on her quest for the most attractive fashion accessory (in other words, shopping in boutiques)...the first thing you'd want to watch out for in a female fashion boutique is simple - a comfortable chair to sit on and wait. You'll be waiting for a long time before your female partner can decide what dress to pick. And believe me, this will take a long time.

Now, this is one of the reasons why most female-centered boutiques put on chairs and even sofa sets on - to keep the male comfortable while waiting. I've spent some time with my female partner while she looks for a good top to match her outfit a few days ago. Now, we're going to take a look at different boutiques in SM City Cebu we visited and see how they pair up on a man's perspective.

SM Cebu Boutiques:

1. Bayo

First up, Bayo. Yes, the boutique that offers an excellent and elegant line of women fashion items at a moderate price.

Men's Perspective:

No chairs to sit on. Maybe that small corner where the manikin stands on will do for 5 mins but after that, you'd really need something to reinforce your back.

Rating = 1 star

2. Black Sheep

Subsidiary of the famous Maldita clothesline. This boutique as what I've seen is targetting teenagers and those who are "teen" at heart for those cute and astounding looks.

Men's Perspective:

It has a swing! Yeah, you can sit there and swing your way for a while. But if you do that, people would think otherwise of you. No back support, so you'd really hurt your back while waiting if it'll take a long time. Only one
swing. No other spots to slack on.

Rating = 2 Stars

3. Mint

Boutique for women and men alike. A lot of things to look at. Clothes are hung everywhere for better visual and good composure.

Men's Perspective:

No spot to sit on. Literally, not even a corner to slack on. You have to stand there for the rest of your time. Dang... I guess the only thing that's good here is that you got to see a lot of Christine Reyes' seductive posters...basically, that's it!

Rating = 1 Star (it's lucky to have one!)

4. Plains and Prints

It has some decent clothes. Mostly centered on semi-formal wear that may also be casual. I don't know what that means but that's what I see from their clothes.

Men's Perspective:

Of all the boutiques I've visited today, this one has the most regard for men. Yes, the P&P boutique practically provided 2 comfortable and nicely designed sofa where us, men, can slouch on. It even has a center table to finish the set.

Rating = 5 Stars!!

We're going to look at more of these boutiques in a later time. But as for now, our verdict would suggest that Plains and Prints definitely deserves a thumbs up for thinking ahead and anticipating a man's perspective on female shopping.

PC Guide : Power On but No Boot

12:02 AM / Posted by ulrikov / comments (0)

You're in the mood to surf the net and maybe gain some knowledge or just idle on your favorite social cyber network (facebook, friendster, etc) but unfortunately when you turn on the computer, the power comes on but apparently there's no boot. Have you experienced this in your modern computer life? This could be a real pain especially if you're really excited to be online.

A friend of mine had this problem with her desktop and I have to troubleshoot it. If you know someone who has knowledge with computers, it might be a good idea to ask for his help. If you don't, then bring it to the nearest computer repair shop.

Here are the signs and symptoms I noted for the problem:

1. Power Led ON.
2. HDD (Hard Disk Drive) Led ON.
3. HSF (Heat Sink Fan) works perfectly fine
4. All wires intact.
5. PSU (Power Supply Unit) turns on.
6. No Display on Monitor.

Now, here's what I did to solve the problem. I'll guide you through all the work that needs to be done.

1. Check all the wires and connections. See if every single wire is connected and if it is still working. If you see a non-working wire, replace it and see if the system boots.
2. Replace your PSU with another one that is in working condition. If it still doesn't boot, then your previous PSU is working properly.
3. Check every single component from the CPU, HDD, Memory, Video Card, Optical Drive, etc. Here's a tip, try to disconnect your HDD and Optical Drive then try to boot. If it still doesn't boot, then you can eliminate those as the non-working parts.
4. After seeing that, take out all your components from the computer casing and place it in a safe area (observe grounding rules).
5. Backlash your unit. Test if the motherboard, processor, memory, and PSU (with connected monitor in VGA port) can boot in the safe area. If it boots without any problem, then the problem lies in your casing. Your casing maybe short-circuited. If doesn't work, then one of your components is defective, test those components on a separate setup.

If the cause of your problem is not within the components, it must have something to do with your computer casing and mounting. This can only mean one thing --- The system is short-circuited.

Now, try to check if all your motherboard standoffs and screws are properly mounted. Here's a tip -- To prevent short circuiting, I usually cover my standoffs with masking tapes after putting them into the case. After doing so, remount all your hardware back to the case. See to it that everything is properly placed. Once done with that, your system unit should boot just fine. And if it doesn't, you remounted it all wrong.

Chicken Apurados Scandal

9:16 AM / Posted by ulrikov / comments (0)

One of the favorite snacks that we, Filipinos, love are finger foods. Finger foods offer different variety and a good example of this one are Chicken Apurados stalls which are very common in the growing malls today. Chicken Apurado outlets offer affordable snacks with commendable tastes.

Well, as I was surfing the internet... A friend of mine gave me this link which made me awe. It is just filthy and truly shocking. You go ahead and watch the video clip taken from a Chicken Apurado Stall in Robinsons, Cebu.

I'm not really a big fan of Chicken Apurado products but this certainly is a big no-no to its food chain market. I do hope that this will be looked at by their administrators. I know sanitary measures are accounted for when having food shops and all but this got to be one of the shocking things I've seen.

PCX Pricelists (8-28-2009)

2:23 PM / Posted by ulrikov / comments (1)

For most computer enthusiasts in the Philippines, one of the good places they'd like to set as standard pricing for components would be the PC Express pricelist (PCX). One of the advantages of PC Express is that their price lists are updated and these are in two forms - dealer's price and the suggested retail price. Dealer's price is also the one awarded to those who purchase via cash. On top of that, the PCX price is uniformed nationwide which makes it very convenient for out-of-Manila buyers.

However, recently the PC express website has been experiencing problems. It is temporarily down and because of such, the valuable price lists cannot be viewed by the PC enthusiasts. To solve this problem, there is a simple way to get about. For Cebu-based buyers, you can try and email the PCX Jones and NRA branches for the updated pricelists. Their emails are listed below:

pcxcebu_jones@yahoo.com
pcxcebu_nra@yahoo.com

I've also posted the August 28, 2009 PCX price lists here for everyone's convenience.

Smash FM : Bisrockers Den Gone?

5:04 PM / Posted by ulrikov / comments (0)

It's been almost a month since I noticed 93.1 Smash FM has stopped airing. For those who haven 't heard of such station, Smash FM has been known to the local area for supporting local rock bands - both Bisrock (slang for "Visayan Rock") and English genres. Most of the songs they play revolve around the rock music genre. The station has been there for almost 4 or 5 years already. And Although Smash FM may have its downside and its own side of critiques, this station has done fairly well in evolving the imagination of the music scene here in Cebu and in the neighboring Visayan regions, as well.

The last thing I've heard from this station is that they were planning to transfer to a better site and one of their Disk Jockey aired this. He added that it may take some time to complete this phase of the station. Just recently though, I was able to hear some songs from the said station. Smash FM may be testing their frequencies and equipment. But from what I've heard, the station has been playing dance and trance music. Which left me wondering...Is the former Smash FM, the station that rocks your emotion, gone? Let's hope not. For the thousands of its listeners (both supporters and critiques), there is not much we can do about this but hope...and wait.

Bugnay : A Local Shrub

11:57 PM / Posted by ulrikov / comments (0)

Wondering around town, I encountered this rare plant. The locals call it "Bugnay" in the local Visayan dialect. It is a plant which bears small fruits that resembles the western berries.

Like all other plants, it grows into a tree and bears fruits. The fruit it bears has a deep red color and ripens into a dark violet shade. Its fruit is quite sweet and has a unique taste. Like the western berries, it leaves a violet shade on your teeth and tongue if you eat it. Indeed, the fruit possesses a sweet and unique taste which sets it apart from the other surrounding plants.

Some of the commoners in the area told me that some people convert this into some sort of wine. According to them, it possesses herbal and therapeutic properties. Further studies are yet to prove and develop the potential of this plant. But one thing is certain, this Bugnay plant truly has a rare appeal which we all can appreciate.

Prayer to St. Jude

11:51 PM / Posted by ulrikov / comments (0)

I'm not really a religious type of person but I do believe in the power of a prayer. I found this lying in my room. I find it really useful to get me through my times of darkness. It's not a guarantee to fulfill every wish that you desire but sometimes a prayer can give you something much more importance - internal peace.

Prayer to St. Jude

Holy Saint Jude, Apostle and Martyr, Great in virtue and rich in miracles, Near kinsman of Jesus Christ, Faithful intercessor of all Who invoke your special patronage in time of need. To you I have recourse from the depths of my heart and humbly beg to whom God has given such great power to come to my assistance. Help me in my present and urgent petition (name your petition). In return I promise to make your name known and cause you to be invoked. Saint Jude pray for me and all those who invoke your aid. Amen.

Pray this 9 times a day for 9 consecutive days. On the 8th day, your prayers will be answered, for this prayer has never known to fail. Please don't forget to publish this once your wish is granted.

"Miracles are only given to those who believe in it".

NU 107 Cebu

12:16 AM / Posted by ulrikov / comments (0)

Last week I was scanning through the air waves for a decent radio station that play my kind of music. I scanned from the start to the last station on the higher frequencies. Then I came across NU 107.5.

As I listened to the station, I noticed something different. Unlike months ago, this NU 107.5 is fresh. As I continued listening to the station, I then noticed that this NU is not the live broadcast of its Manila-based station. It is a new station in Cebu city. I've heard some test DJ's over the station and practically everything is still in testing phases.

I was glad that NU 107.5 finally reopened in our beloved city of Cebu. Here's a brief history...NU 107.5 had a local station here in Cebu which was situated in the Ayala Center. It was shutdown on the early 2000s and its broadcast was redirected to the Manila-based home station. Apparently, when this move was done...ratings of the station went down here in Cebu area and most of the local bands lost support from the only rock station.

Now, it has reopened and I'm sure this is a good move for NU. Hopefully, the rock station will help cater our local talents and bands. I am expecting something good for NU 107.5 Cebu. Rock on!
